NAVION PERFORMANCE
Every year at the annual ANS convention performance competition events are held. These events include pilot proficiency, aircraft efficiency, and of course all out speed.

In the proficiency event the pilots are given a triangular course for which they predict the time required to fly the course and the amount of fuel required to complete the flight. Each entrant will then fly the course and our judges will measure the actual time flown and the amount of fuel used. The entrant who most closely predicts their results is declared winner of that event.

In the efficiency event the pilots fly a different triangular course and their time and fuel usage are measured. In this event the goal is to take as little time as possible while using the least amount of fuel, ie. "go fast but don't burn gas". Scores are calculated using time and fuel used to achieve an efficiency score. The pilot with the highest score wins this event.

In the all out speed event entrants fly a straight line course to another airport and time is measured by our judges. Navions are separated into horsepower classes so that each pilot is only competing against others with similar Navions. This event answers the question "How fast is a Navion?" quite nicely. The winner of each class competes in a "handicap event" on the return flight. Below I have listed the actual speeds for each horsepower class winner for the last several years. Keep in mind that these speeds are maximum effort and winds are involved. All speeds are calculated by time taken to fly a measured distance from a standing start on the runway to a flying finish, so actual speeds are a bit faster than those listed.
